Chemistry is a difficult class to get through. It requires massive amounts of studying, and you must grasp many different strange concepts before you are able to truly understand the lessons. But it’s an important class to take, since it is a requirement for lots of degrees. It also provides many valuable knowledge foundations upon which you will base the information you learn in some future classes. So if you feel that you are not doing very well in your chemistry class, you should look into getting a tutor to help you out and give you the boost you need to succeed.
First you should inquire at your college, and find out if there are any sponsored tutoring programs. At many colleges, students can sign up to tutor other students, and receive extra credit for it (or do it as an assignment for some other class). If they are knowledgeable about the subject, and are able to teach well, then it can be a great way to learn the content without paying for a professional tutor. Ask at the student resource center of your school, and schedule an appointment to be tutored. If you feel that you can accomplish the level of intensive one on one studying that you want, then continue with it. Otherwise, try some other methods.
If you don’t mind doing your tutoring in a virtual setting, then you can find online tutors who are extremely well-versed in whatever subject you need help with. You can converse through instant text messages, whiteboard applications, video feeds, voice connections, and any combination of those. There are numerous tutoring services on the internet, each with its own unique offerings, and varied pricing. You can find chemistry tutoring for just a few dollars an hour, and converse with a well-educated tutor in India or China (as long as imperfect English doesn’t bother you). Or you can pay top dollar and get taught by professional tutors in America. It all depends on your budget, and what kind of tutoring you expect to get.
Another option is to self-tutor – basically, studying with the help of other resources. If your issue is memorization, then you can download free programs that allow you to enter terms in, then play memory games with them in order to learn whatever you want. Some will even use advanced memorization and association techniques to help imprint the concepts into your mind, and help you remember them for as long as you need to. You should try out a few different programs to find the one that fulfills your needs the best.
Sometimes students will be doing so poorly in a class that they will not understand even the most basic concepts. Other times, they will simply need to memorize a list of items to catch up with the class. Or maybe they just need a little reminder of the material. When picking a tutor, you need to analyze yourself to figure out where your needs are, then pick the service that fits those needs as best as possible.

Jeff, I must admit I am very impressed with your work in tutoring chemistry students! It certainly awakens my interest in chemistry and teaches me a little about it. I plan to buy your DVDs and recommend them to anyone wishing to learn the basics of chemistry.
Education is never wasted, so taking a class just to tutor it isn't a bad idea. Normally with a question of this type, I'd say that if you weren't into a class personally, you risk doing poorly in it. But because you are going to be tutoring it, you'll have to master the subject area. Teaching is the best way to learn, I think. Therefore, since you don't risk failing at a subject that you are not personally interested in and you stand to make a significant amount of money from doing so, I don't see why not to do it.
Actually, there is one reason not to do it. If it prevents you from taking a class that you are really interested in or which you need for your own program, then you might want to reconsider. But if you've got electives to kill anyway or if you don't mind a course overload, go for it!
Dead or Live:
Several things come to mind:
If your 18 & I assume your living at home, where are your parents when he is tutoring you?
If your not living at home but live by yourself or with roommates why is he coming to your place to tutor you? That sounds very inappropriate of him to do. He should be tutoring you at school during school hours. That is very risky business of you being alone with a man in your home with no one around.
You need to set boundaries with this tutor. You need to say keep your distance, I feel uncomfortable when you get close like that, even if you don't mean it. He is over stepping his boundaries by asking you to go for coffee or anythings else while he is your tutor. That can be seen as abuse of power over you. If I were you I'd report him.
Is he the only tutor you can get? Why don't you switch to a female? Why aren't you reporting him to your department head of chemistry.
As you said you are having some issues with men right now. Why compound it further with getting involved with him. Even though you say your not going to do anything stupid. When emotions are involved you can't be sure that will not happen & if he is able to manipulate you into doing something with him. He is much older than you & can see that you are vulnerable.
So again I say you drop him as a tutor, you report him to the dept. head, get a female tutor & if one isn't available then the next male you get get tutored at school not at home. Surround your self with friends & family to get through this time of having issues with/about men. Before you regret it.
If you are good at understanding things from textbooks, rather than needing an interactive session, the suggestion someone had about finding other textbooks is a good one. But I suspect you're like most of us and a textbook is fairly worthless without a teacher to make sense of it.
For particular questions just post them in Answers. Most will get decent answers and probably light the topic up for you.
If you do not get decent answers, need help picking amongst them, would like an aspect of an answer explained further, or have broader questions than people like to answer here, feel free to email me at: bimeateater@yahoo.com.
You can also do it through Answers, but then that 1500 word limit comes up, again and again. You can further anonymize yourself by setting up a new Yahoo account for that sole purpose.
i used to live there!!! there is this place called silvan learning center and it has tutors and teachers for everything you should go there i hear it is really fun too.☺☺☺
HPHS maintains a list of tutors. Talk to your counselor. Or, phone over to SMU Chemistry department and Math department and tell them you are looking for tutors. You might get a good student helper!
I'm with ChemTear; keep in mind that the answers on this forum, although often inaccurate and sometimes offensive, are at least free. Tutors often charge for their help.
Chemistry isn't easy, and I agree that a good tutor helps by leaps and bounds.
There are a few things you can do:
1) Ask a senior for help. When I say senior, I mean a student who has graduated from this course in your school (possibly someone who has graduated from the high school already). They will know best what to do and how to go around the problems you're facing.
2) If you're willing to pay, then find a tutor at your local community centre or look through your phonebook. There will be ads for tutors in there.
3) Ask your parent's to get you one. Parent's can easily check around with colleagues etc.
try regents prep.org.
this site gives plenty of problems and solutions too.
i use it all the time!
