Very little money is required to start a home tutoring business. This is why tutoring is one of the best home based businesses available and the most profitable. There is almost no start up cost and you need very little training beyond a traditional education you get in high school. Of course higher education helps but is simply not necessary to succeed at tutoring. This is really a great option for making extra money for stay at home parents who want to stay home but would like a little bit more money in their pockets each week. Tutoring offers a schedule which is extremely flexible and also you need only to spend a few hours a day to make a profit. A s tutor expect to make between 20 and 100 dollars per session. The price usually varies with your experience, and education as well as the subject matter you are teaching and the challenges the student has. A special education tutor will make more money than a traditional tutor.
Remember tutors have the ability to work out of their homes, travel to the students home, or work out of the local library. If you start a home tutoring business you will have the freedom to choose exactly what you want to teach, who you want to teach, and how you want to teach it. Below are a couple of points to ponder before jumping head first in the the tutoring business. Good luck and teach on!
Funds! You can basically start a home tutoring business for about $20 bucks. My advice is to spend it on supplies at the local dollar store. Stock up and pencils, paper, and rewards.
Pricing! Rates vary and after meeting the client you will know what they are willing to pay and what they can afford. Adjust your rates to fit the clients needs and your own needs. Remember you time is worth money and do not be afraid to at least ask for what you would like and the bargain to a price which is compromise for both parties. As a rule services in a bit city are going to run more money then in a small town. Also, the more services your provide the more money you should get paid.
Sell yourself! Remember if you want to start a home tutoring business you need to make sure you get your name out there. If you want people to come and use your services you have to let people know that you are a tutor. People usually like some type of certification. Usually your local community college or adult education programs will offer a certification program for tutors or substitute teachers. This is a great way to show you have the right education to start a home tutoring business.

This really needs to be adress in all school natinal level as well so we can beat this dropout rate.
Absolutely! I know 7 families in my neighborhood where the kids are homeschooled but the parents struggle to keep up with the curriculum due to time & work constrainsts.
A home tutor would be perfect in this case as it gives homeschool students (and parents) a much-needed and qualified help.

All the best!
No, Michigan does not apply the sales tax to services. However, if you sold textbooks, outlines, or other materials as part of your business, you would have to charge sales tax on those items.
If you are self employed and make more than $400 for the year, then you will have to pay Self Employment tax. It will be 15.3% of your net profit. It includes SS tax and medicare tax.
However, since you are self employed, you get to deduct half of your self employment tax when figuring your taxable income.
I have had my own house cleaning business for about a year and a half. I stated with 3 customers. I got one customer from a flyer I posted at the dry cleaners, but the rest I've gotten from referrals. Let everyone you know that you are looking for cleaning customers; print up your own business cards on your computer and hand them out to EVERYBODY. Ask your current customers to let their friends and family know that you are accepting new customers. I have several seniors, but the rest are families. I work mornings and afternoons and, if my customer really needs me to, on Saturday. Last year I made about $15,500, and that's working about 22 hours a week! I wouldn't go back to a 40-hr desk job for anything! I could get more work if I put up more posters or put my business cards on doors, but I'm content for now with what I'm doing, but, if you do a good job and your customers like you, you should be swamped with work very soon. Good luck!
When I read your question, the first thing that popped into my mind was foreign language tutoring. The tutoring I am thinking about is online, one on one tutoring through a webcam. Many people want to learn new language but do not have time to go to class. Since you are certified, you can definitely do something like this. Also, it will not take too much capital to start either.
As for your husband, since he has many connections in medical world (very very good thing) and he does not want to go into sales (too bad). I am thinking that he can be a great medical consultant. There are tons of companies that are looking to break into medical industry. He can use his connection to show the business how to get inside, if their product will work in that industry, etc.
Good luck and please let us know how it works out in the end. You can email me through my profile.
post flyers at schools, libraries, supermarkets.
talk to school districts about your qualifications and get in touch with principals.
disco if you want.
use a hanky.
homeschooling is not the best thing.
create a website.
get a job at sylvan learning center then quit after you've stolen some of their business.

The ad looks good to me but I would recommend that you mention that the tutoring will be performed by a high school student so that prospective clients know up front and won't be blindsided…expecting to find professional instructors and finding, instead, the neighborhood teenager. There's nothing wrong with a high school student tutoring elementary school kids but you want to let the parents know up front. You might change the first line of your ad to read "High school student offers tutoring and homework help for your child". I would also recommend that you consider charging more than $5/hour for this service. If you are worth $5/hour then you are certainly worth $10/hour. $10/hour is not prohibitively expensive for parents who are willing to pay for tutoring services for their kids. If the business proves to be succesful you should consider raising your rates to $15/hour. $5/hour is way too little for this type of service. Good luck with your new business.
