There is No Glory in Failing Your Classes - Three Tips to Hiring the Perfect Tutor For You

Let’s face it… no matter how smart, academically talented, or hard working you are, no one person is an automatic expert in every subject, and at some point in your life you just may need to hire a tutor. It is often a very upsetting experience to spend hours upon hours studying and still walk away with a less than acceptable level of understanding required to pass your courses. For many people struggling to gain understanding, hiring a tutor is an investment well worth its weight in gold. However, many people have never had the experience of hiring a tutor and here are some tips to get you started in the right direction.

1. Ask your teacher or professor for references

Many students are intimidated to discuss their lack of understanding with their instructors. However, they may be your most valuable resources. Oftentimes, instructors are not only knowledgeable about the subject matter, but can point you in the direction of additional readings or resources to help broaden your knowledge base. Even still, you may be lucky enough to get personalized tutoring from your instructor, or get a referral from a colleague that you may be able to hire as a tutor.

2. Put out an ad on Craigslist or other online classifieds

Craigslist is not just for advertising garage sales. As a matter of fact, many tutors and instructors offer affordable, personalized services to help identify your problem areas and help you pass your classes. If there are no services advertised in your area, take the initiative to place an ad for yourself. You never know, an advanced student may be perusing the listings and be willing to tutor you in exchange for extra cash. As always, make sure you discuss your needs up front, and if necessary, ask for references.

3. Do not wait until the final exam to hire a tutor

Tutors are great resources to help facilitate advanced understanding of a particular subject matter, but they need adequate time to work with you to increase your knowledge. Many students are embarrassed about needing additional help, determined to study hard to compensate for their academic weaknesses alone, or panicked about the prospect of failing an important class and wait until the very final weeks of class to start working with a tutor. While a quick turnaround of a few days or one week may be sufficient to learn a single concept, all of the cramming in the world may not be able to help you earn a passing grade.

Taking the initiative to seek out a tutor may be one of the most helpful things that students can do for themselves in their quest for higher education. There is no shame in admitting that you need help, no glory in failing your classes, and after earning the grade that you desire, you will agree that an informative tutor is worth the financial investment.
