The internet has ushered in a communications revolution. For both tutors and prospective students, the educational innovations that online learning offers can be highly beneficial. A 2009 U.S. Department of Education review of online learning concluded that K-12 students who took classes online (in whole or in part) performed better than those who had had traditional classroom teaching. They also suggest that blended learning (a combination of face to face, conventional lessons together with online learning) produced the best results of all.
It is still early days; online learning courses have only been running for ten years at most. That means that relatively few studies of the effectiveness of online learning have been conducted. Future research is unlikely to uncover problems in online learning itself. The task is rather to ensure that the potential of online learning is maximized as far as possible. There can be little doubt that online learning is the future and that the opportunities and options will grow hugely in coming years. Studies also suggest that online learning is good for teachers too, helping them to hone their teaching skills and engage with learners to maximum effect.
However, it isn’t just a matter of adding a computer and achieving magical results with online learning. The International Association for K-12 Online Learning, which examines the issues in detail, concludes from their own research that there are three key factors involved in effective online learning. Much still depends on the design of the course or online tutoring program, the quality and ability of the online tutor and the nature of the interaction between tutor and learner. The organization suggests that ultimately it is the quality of the teacher or online tutor who is guiding the online learnign process that is the most important factor.
There are many reasons for the enhanced achievements that result from students learning online. For one thing, most children and teenagers find computers engaging – often more so than listening to an instructor. Learning online helps students to concentrate on the task at hand, and minimizes distractions arising from classmates’ behavior. A major advantage of online learning is that students can learn at their own pace, whether that is faster or slower than that of their peers in the classroom.
The identification of blended learning as perhaps the most effective way to enhance student achievement is especially significant for those seeking tutoring services. Learners who make use of tutoring services are in essence getting the best of all worlds: classroom instruction, plus individual attention from an online tutor, plus the opportunity to work at the pace that is best suited to their particular abilities.
Without a doubt, online tutoring and courses for K-12 students constitute a major growth area in today’s educational world, offering learners opportunities that simply did not exist only a decade ago. A well-designed course or online tutoring program, delivered by a qualified tutor, is an engaging way to help learners to achieve their full potential.

Another tutorial video. This one is focused on Back in Black only. It’s a tutorial many of you have asked for. Adding also that, PLEASE do NOT ask for tabs. I do not use tablatures. I used to use them years ago. Tabs are a very good thing if and when you need them. But I have studied the type of music well enough to not need tabs. I do NOT write tabs. I by far favour to go by video. By video, you can watch – though most of the times not closely – and hear what I do, singled out form the …

Aretill,
As a MFL teacher myself, I decided in November 2008 to teach myself Italian, to try and become aware of the way in which I learn languages independently. I’d probably have to say that due to the fact that linguistic acquisition in the mother tongue occurs without a rigorous structure, a spontaneous exploration of different methods, randomly chosen and looked at briefly in any one go, are the most useful. I’d be happy to discuss this further, if you like. No characters left here.
This is quite right. As a teacher myself, and a linguistic psychologist, I’ve considered, explored and developed so many forms of language learning, relating to both written and oral sentence building, mnemonics, grammatical accuracy in relation to sounds and set word combinations, etc, and shared these with my students, in the hope they will use as many as possible fo their own gain. Some, however, still seem too heavily reliant on learning solely what I teach during class time.
How I’ve waited for sb to finally remark those very words. It’s often an unquestioned assumption that you can learn a language better from a native speaker. I was employed on a 7-week basis, teaching Spanish to Y6 primary children in 2007 (I have a degree in languages, a teaching degree and also studied the linguistic psychology as a PhD contributor for three years). The school decided not to continue the Spanish due to a funding shortage and have since taken on a native speaker.
First: Attention must be paid.
Then: Practice, review, testing and feedback
Hi!
Yes. I've used the Rocket Piano course to teach myself piano and I have become quite good over the last year or so.
I think it works just as good (if not better) than having a piano teacher. And it's definitely a lot less expensive. Plus you can practice whenever you want which is definitely a big plus for me.
Any type of music lesson is going to be only as effective as you make it. If you have the discipline to learn at home, it will work fine. If you don't have the discipline, don't bother.
The advantage of having a guitar instructor is that you have someone there to show you what you are doing wrong right away and how to correct it, while if you are just going by something inanimate, it can't give you that immediate feedback. It can also be someone to encourage you when are doing well.
Very interesting! The idea of working with a tutor when you are in a more advanced level is really nice. However, the idea of taking control over you studies and turn everybody else in your own tutor is just awesome!
Are you going to talk about the possibility of “coaching” in language learning? By coaching I mean teaching how to learn a language instead of properly teaching the language itself.
I will be posting four or five more videos of this format over the next week or so, and I believe you will find your answer contained in them in more detail than I can provide here, so please wait a bit and write again after the series is complete if you would like more advice.
Dear ProfASAr,
What would be your recommendation for someone wanting to begin a self-guided course of language study? Specifically, I am a native speaker of English who has already an almost-fluent knowledge of German. I wanted to learn Spanish and can devote 30min to one hour daily.
I want to focus on speaking and listening, later focusing on reading and writing. Would you recommend Pimsleur CDs supplemented by a specific textbook?
Thanks in advance for your response.
It is awesome and here is where you can find it online:

Alexander I want to know your opinion or Rosetta Stone and their method.
Start an online love affair with an Italian person.
This is very interesting. In fact, the way it has worked best for me, has been to learn the basics by myself, and then either attend a course (for Welsh) or go to a country and immerse myself (with German and Hungarian). Of course, I have only learnt very few languages cf. a real polyglot. Love your videos though!
Online classes are similiar to traditional classes in two ways:.1) If you put a lot into the course, you'll get a lot of it, if you don't interact much in the discussion area or keep up with your assignments and tests, you won't learn much. 2) If you have a teacher who is a good communicator, is organized, and gives consistent feedback, you'll learn alot. If your teacher can't write well, is disorganized, unfamiliar with the material or online software, you will have to work a lot harder to learn.
I'm taking my masters online, and administer some online programs, so this is what I'd think about before committing to 5 online classes (5 is a lot of classes no matter how you take them!)…we provide this checklist for students wondering about whether they should take online classes:

If you answered "Yes" to fewer than 13 statements, rethink your reasons for wanting to enroll in an online course. You may not feel comfortable with this style of instruction and may not be capable of learning this way.
If you answered "Yes" to at least 13 statements, online learning may be right for you!
Good luck!
I agree with you – people really start excelling when they take charge of their own learning. Once we get into a good groove of how we learn and finding synergies with stuff we already know, learning becomes an insatiable ‘fix’ . Using other people to learn is fine, but we need to know how to extract what we need from them – not just what they think we need.
