According to the Sloan Consortium, which monitors online education in K-12 schools in the United States, online learning is on the rise. According to their report, “the overall number of K-12 students engaged in online courses in 2007-2008, is estimated at 1,030,000. This represents a 47% increase since 2005-2006”.
That’s a big jump, by any standards, but hardly surprising. The internet has become a place to do many things but above all it remains the place where people turn for information. With ever-faster broadband available to more and more people and innovations in web technologies marching on, it’s not longer just about looking up that information, as you would with a book. Static pages are old hat. With the interactive possibilities of Web 2.0 the possibilities for using the internet in innovative ways in education are multiplying exponentially.
That’s great news for students everywhere. It’s also great news for anyone with the knowledge to pass on their skills, by becoming an online tutor. Online tutor jobs are an ideal solution for educators of all kinds to help others and make a living (or supplement their existing income) in financially challenging times. As long as people want and need to learn, jobs for tutors will always be available.
If you’re considering applying for online tutor jobs, the main requirements are excellent knowledge of your subject and the ability to communicate that knowledge effectively. But there’s a bit more to it. Just because there are plenty of tutor jobs available doesn’t mean you can just set up shop. Anyone considering applying for online tutoring jobs needs to get a grip on the medium and its potentials.
Online learning is obviously not quite the same as traditional teaching, even though tutors can interact with students in real time, perhaps using video. The first years of online education were based on replicating traditional, instructor-led teaching practices. Often learning was based on modules or educational packages that learners worked through in their own time, before hooking up with instructors for assessment, feedback and guidance.
With Web 2.0, e-learning is all about making the most of the interactive possibilities available. Its about learners using the possibilities that computers offer for simulating environments that permit practical learning. Online learning communities stimulate learning through participation, through webinars, forums and sharing of experiences. Computers offer ways of making learning engaging and fun. Some educational institutions have even set up virtual classrooms on Second Life!
If you are planning to get yourself online tutoring jobs, it’s worth noting that the best tutors are those who understand how online learning works and how the internet has the capacity to enhance the educational experience. An online tutoring job isn’t only about teaching others. For most online tutors it will be a learning process in itself, as technology changes teaching strategies and we learn more about how online learning can outstrip traditional pedagogical methods. One thing is for certain. Those who master the medium will tell you that online tutoring is a rewarding one.

This is quite right. As a teacher myself, and a linguistic psychologist, I’ve considered, explored and developed so many forms of language learning, relating to both written and oral sentence building, mnemonics, grammatical accuracy in relation to sounds and set word combinations, etc, and shared these with my students, in the hope they will use as many as possible fo their own gain. Some, however, still seem too heavily reliant on learning solely what I teach during class time.
Aretill,
As a MFL teacher myself, I decided in November 2008 to teach myself Italian, to try and become aware of the way in which I learn languages independently. I’d probably have to say that due to the fact that linguistic acquisition in the mother tongue occurs without a rigorous structure, a spontaneous exploration of different methods, randomly chosen and looked at briefly in any one go, are the most useful. I’d be happy to discuss this further, if you like. No characters left here.
Very interesting! The idea of working with a tutor when you are in a more advanced level is really nice. However, the idea of taking control over you studies and turn everybody else in your own tutor is just awesome!
Are you going to talk about the possibility of “coaching” in language learning? By coaching I mean teaching how to learn a language instead of properly teaching the language itself.
I do not know the answer to that one, but I am an advocate of Sylvan. I had a student in my class 3 years ago who came in reading 2 grades below grade level and doing math 2 grades below as well. She did have strong comprehension, though, which is why she was still in her age/grade. Sylvan really helped her learning immensely! She gained 2 grades in reading and ended the year above grade level. She ended the year in math at grade level. It is a great program and I wish you luck!
Most Sylvan Learning Centers require that one is a certified teacher with a bachelors degree. However, they will hire you without a certification but you must have a Bachelors.
Most centers hire without a certification but you must have an advanced degree in Math, Chemistry or Science because expertise is needed for the upper level tutorial students.
A background check is conducted because you will be working with minors.
If you are interested in a particular SLC, it's best to contact that center directly versus applying online.
I will be posting four or five more videos of this format over the next week or so, and I believe you will find your answer contained in them in more detail than I can provide here, so please wait a bit and write again after the series is complete if you would like more advice.
Dear ProfASAr,
What would be your recommendation for someone wanting to begin a self-guided course of language study? Specifically, I am a native speaker of English who has already an almost-fluent knowledge of German. I wanted to learn Spanish and can devote 30min to one hour daily.
I want to focus on speaking and listening, later focusing on reading and writing. Would you recommend Pimsleur CDs supplemented by a specific textbook?
Thanks in advance for your response.

Good luck!
I worked as a part-time tutor at a Sylvan in California while I was graduate school. This was 1997-1998. I was paid (I THINK) $10 an hour. Maybe a buck or two an hour more.
It is REALLY easy. Now, Sylvan may have very well changed in the ten years since I worked there, but they give you "perscriptions". They have the lesson plans made out for you when you get there. You have two or three (never more) students you work with at a time. The students basically practice basic skills. You don't really teach them anything. You'll say, "Here little Jimmy, work on this phonics card". Ten minutes later, you'll say, "now do this one". Simple stuff.
I enjoyed it. The other tutors were mostly young like I was at the time. 20's-30's. Good times.
You also MUST be a certified teacher.
something boring…you want them to notice your personality and skills rather than your heels. Slacks with flats, and a sweater, maybe with a crisp white shirt underneath.
well as he isn´t a native he will be able to know which are the hard parts for non natives like me, so hopefully will be able to clarify those.
I would suggest that you look at your schoolif they have a psychologist usually they do. Tell them your problem and ask them for a solution. If this does not work find a friend in school who is good in math and ask for help… If this does not work find someone online that could help you in math…. this also works… I give some math courses in this way. Good luck.
I agree with you – people really start excelling when they take charge of their own learning. Once we get into a good groove of how we learn and finding synergies with stuff we already know, learning becomes an insatiable ‘fix’ . Using other people to learn is fine, but we need to know how to extract what we need from them – not just what they think we need.
Seven dollars and seventy-five cents an hour. Also they don't tutor kids. They correct the work they do.
This is very interesting. In fact, the way it has worked best for me, has been to learn the basics by myself, and then either attend a course (for Welsh) or go to a country and immerse myself (with German and Hungarian). Of course, I have only learnt very few languages cf. a real polyglot. Love your videos though!
Alexander I want to know your opinion or Rosetta Stone and their method.
How I’ve waited for sb to finally remark those very words. It’s often an unquestioned assumption that you can learn a language better from a native speaker. I was employed on a 7-week basis, teaching Spanish to Y6 primary children in 2007 (I have a degree in languages, a teaching degree and also studied the linguistic psychology as a PhD contributor for three years). The school decided not to continue the Spanish due to a funding shortage and have since taken on a native speaker.
