It’s no secret that numerous online tutoring services are making themselves available for students in need. But even when pointed in the right direction, how do you make the final decision as to what resource is best for you? There are a few ways that you can figure out which online tutoring route to take. Let’s look at what they are …
Assess Your Needs
One of the first steps that you want to consider when deciding what online tutoring service to choose is assessing your needs. Everyone has different goals they’d like to achieve as they seek their tutoring assistance. For instance, you may be seeking a service that can help you maintain a good grade in a class that you already understand, in which case you may not need a great deal of attention. Or you may be looking for help with a specific subject that requires specialized assistance, such as calculus or physics.
Depending on your need, you may need a service that focuses solely on a particular subject so that you can receive the depth and expertise you need. Or you may be fine with a service that offers online tutorials without live interaction. Determining what you need help with the most can help you choose what service will work best for you – and can save you the headache of signing up for something you don’t actually need.
Locate the Right Resources
Once you’ve assessed what it is you’re looking for in an online tutoring service, the next step is to actually locate the right resource for you. There are a number of resources that you can take advantage of that have the ability to suit your needs. For instance, if you need help with math, you can utilize resources that offer online math problems with solutions to help you practice, many of which will allow you to print them off so that you can work on them without your computer.
Also, you can utilize live chats with certified teachers and tutors who can interact with you much like one would in a traditional tutoring setting. Additionally, you may be able to submit a problem that you need help with, after which a person will provide the answer – or more clearly defined steps to get to your answer – so that you can better understand your homework.
Get Started
After you’ve assessed your tutoring needs and have located the right resources, you’re ready to get started. It’s good to know before diving in, however, that many online tutoring services charge a fee. You may have to pay a monthly fee for usage – or a one-time membership fee. Whatever the case, it’s good to examine the cost to decide just how much tutoring help you need from which resource(s).
There’s no doubt that taking the online tutoring route can be convenient and even fun. So if you think that you’re ready to get started on your journey, the time is now to begin choosing the right online tutoring service for you.

Is there a way to tutor my son without having to pay for a personal tutoring service? My son is in second grade and his teacher stated that he is writing and reading below grade average. She stated that he seems to have gone from Kindergarden to Second grade without learning anything in first. I'm a single parent and I cannot afford a tutoring service like Sylvan, is there something I can do better?

Post a flyer on your school bulletin board and/or school website, and see what kind of interest level there is for your idea. Managing a volunteer program certainly has the potential to become a large task; organizing and pairing volunteers with students could become time-consuming if the program really takes off. You can always recruit some volunteers to help you manage it, however, and staying organized by using a computer program like Microsoft Excel might simplify things somewhat. I'm impressed with your ambition and desire to help others; it reflects maturity and self-awareness, as well as an awareness of the world around you. Good luck!

I teach a free first grade phonics course via an online classroom, but I have a full student load at the moment. However, I can do some diagnostic activities with him. From that I may be able to give you some objectives to work on and some free activities to do with him. When he meets those objectives, I will meet with the two of you again and give you the next step.
My schedule will ease up over the summer months and I will likely be able to fit him in for some one-on-one or small group (2 to 3 students) free tutoring depending on how intensive his need is at the time.
You can access the course page for Phonics and Phonics Intervention to get my contact information at

I am the 1st grade homeroom teacher there. The actual class and tutoring occurs in a live, online classroom with full-duplex audio and whiteboard. He will need a mic and a headphone.
It would be helpful if he isn't told it is a test. He needs to be relaxed and the activities will be very game-like, so it will seem like play to him. If possible, I would like to see him over the course of several short visits instead of one long one.
Let me know if you are interested so I can get set up for him. Just e-mail me using the contact information at the link I provided above.
Start with one kid and focus on the subject you are best at. Experience for yourself what it's like interacting with the student and his/her parents. Get a feel for the tutoring business. When you have gained some experience, get more students. Here's what you can do to find clients/students:
1. Contact counselors in local schools.
2. Put up fliers in supermarkets, laundromats, library bulletin boards.
3. Find out if there are community centers or libraries that offer facilities or programs for tutoring.
4. Take out an advertisement in a local newspaper–for cheaper rates, look for weeklies or all-ad papers.
5. Put fliers on phone poles.
6. Stand outside the school during parents' night and pass out fliers to all the adults that pass.
7. Stuff fliers into faculty mailboxes (get permission from the principal first).
8. Make several 15 minute public-access cable programs that present lessons in your subject(s), and let the cable company show them on public access channels.
9. Wear a t-shirt custom-printed that says "Tutor for Hire!"
10. Go to sites that allow you to post free ads.
As a private tutor can charge a higher rate but you are restricted to specific area – smaller market of potential students. If you tutor online, the rate is lower but you can have a worldwide market of potential students. Try sites like:
(1) http://www.tuitionplaza.com/tutoring/
(2) http://www.tutor.com
(3) … many other sites (use search engine – Good luck!)
Hope this helps you.
