If you don't feel qualified, take a few classes at a community college and limit who you tutor to younger grades. Eventually, you will feel you are qualified and will be able to list these qualifications for parents. Expect that the students will come to your home or you will go to their home. You might also choose to tutor them at a coffee shop or a sidewalk cafe. Don't expect that your library has a talking area or private booths to reserve where people can run their tutoring business and don't expect your library to have a computer dedicated for a full day's use of a tutor and his or her seven student charges. And lastly, because it has happened, don't expect the librarian to take your messages, update your appointment calendar, and broadcast messages for you over the intercom system when a parent doesn't show to pick up little Johnny.

When you do go to a library with your student, be aware that some tutors have been just plain rude, so it's not you. If you are personable, quiet, and do not regularly cause a disturbance, then you should be welcomed, possibly even revered for what good you do. It's those pushy, big mouth people who have caused some libraries to make policies banning the activities of tutors – we can't ban them, just what they do. I hope that's not the case at your local library.
