First, check whether your school already has a program. Lots of high school clubs do tutoring as community service. For example, at the high school where I taught, the Spanish Club would go to the elementary school to read books to the students there who were learning English. If there's a club that does tutoring, you could go help out with that and then ask the elem teacher if there are opportunities for you to do it more often than the club comes. As a high school, I spent lots of time tutoring at the local elem school (I even got to leave the high school early to go tutor!), and the person who set it up for me was a high school teacher who knew who to contact at the elem school for me.

If your favorite elem school teachers are still working at the school you attended, write them an email (you can usually get it off the school website) and ask whether they or the other teachers they work with would have a need for your help.

One note - if you're tutoring at a public school, you won't be allowed to be alone with the kid(s). But it's very likely a teacher would let you sit in the corner of the classroom and help a child with reading, for example, while she works with other groups of students in the room.

Finally, community organizations could also be a good choice. You could check out Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, churches or community centers with after-school programs.

I am a middle school teacher currently tutoring a 3rd grader. We were working twice a week for about 2 hours at a time, but it seemed to be too much for her at once, so i suggested 1 hr/day mon-thurs. this has seemed to work the best because we can do a little each day and be consistent. it does, however, require me to rearrange my schedule, but since i'm young and living on my own it really doesn't affect me too much. her mom and i worked out a price of $25/hr. when i asked at my school, i was told the average price for tutoring in the district was $35-50/hr depending on the tutor, which I personally found ridiculous.

I've been working as a tutor for over 10 years and always tried to market myself independently. Recently, I started using Wyzant which is an online tutor data base that students can search for tutors. They heavily market and I've gotten great business from them. I tutor mainly math and had over 14 clients this past semester. You can set your own rates and they take care of all of the money which is great. They take a commission and as you increase the ours you have tutored, your take home pay goes up. They offer many subjects which they test you on to make sure you are qualified. I know they offer ESL. Students search for you based on your zipcode and you can also limit how far you want to travel. You can create your own profile and picture as well which I've found really helpful. Make sure you highlight your accomplishments but also especially any experience you have. When a student comes to the site, they can search tutors or post a "tutor wanted" ad. If a wanted ad comes up in your subject, it will get forwarded to your e-mail. Using them has let me go from tutoring part time to tutoring as a full time job and I highly recommend it. I wasn't sure at first if it would be worth it, since they take a commission, but in the end the money is a whole lot better than working at a tutoring place. Often tutoring companies charge $50-$100/hour but you only make $10/hr! Wyzant suggest sthat new tutors set their starting rate at $40/hour, but I set mine a little lower at $35/hour and I think that really helped pull in business. See the link in the sources for more info. I really hopes this helps! good luck!

I live in Macon. I don't know of any, but maybe I could be of assistance. I would not charge anything until I see the material and make sure that I can help. But I would be limited to weekends. Send me an email at kbradford01061977@yahoo.com if you are interested. (We would have to meet in a public place)

Post a flyer on your school bulletin board and/or school website, and see what kind of interest level there is for your idea. Managing a volunteer program certainly has the potential to become a large task; organizing and pairing volunteers with students could become time-consuming if the program really takes off. You can always recruit some volunteers to help you manage it, however, and staying organized by using a computer program like Microsoft Excel might simplify things somewhat. I'm impressed with your ambition and desire to help others; it reflects maturity and self-awareness, as well as an awareness of the world around you. Good luck!

Unless you live in/close to a very big city, I'd say it's a total waste of money.

You'd get better results advertising locally-- putting flyers up at local businesses, and maybe even asking the schools nearby to keep a cardholder with your business cards on their front desk. The newspaper is always a great place to advertise too. It really just depends on the city you live in. Most places, there's such a small chance of anyone finding you on that website that it's a waste.

I teach a free first grade phonics course via an online classroom, but I have a full student load at the moment. However, I can do some diagnostic activities with him. From that I may be able to give you some objectives to work on and some free activities to do with him. When he meets those objectives, I will meet with the two of you again and give you the next step.

My schedule will ease up over the summer months and I will likely be able to fit him in for some one-on-one or small group (2 to 3 students) free tutoring depending on how intensive his need is at the time.

You can access the course page for Phonics and Phonics Intervention to get my contact information at

http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/course/view.php?id=24&sesskey=0pKLDXLOFF&switchrole=6

I am the 1st grade homeroom teacher there. The actual class and tutoring occurs in a live, online classroom with full-duplex audio and whiteboard. He will need a mic and a headphone.

It would be helpful if he isn't told it is a test. He needs to be relaxed and the activities will be very game-like, so it will seem like play to him. If possible, I would like to see him over the course of several short visits instead of one long one.

Let me know if you are interested so I can get set up for him. Just e-mail me using the contact information at the link I provided above.
